my prayer

Lord open my lips
so that my mouth may proclaim your praise!
Ps. 51:17

The Sign of the Holy Cross

Armenian Christians cross themselves before and after every prayer, but also when entering and leaving the church, when receiving the blessing, etc. The cross is understood in our church as a living sign of salvation - a sign of suffering, but also the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and with it – the victory over death.

By crossing himself, the Christian symbolizes his belonging to Jesus Christ. At the same time, the sign of the cross also expresses belief in the triune God. It is at the same time the praise of God and a request for his gifts.

When making the sign of the cross, the thumb, index and middle fingers of the right hand are joined and stretched out; Ring finger and pinky touch palm. The three outstretched fingers symbolize the triune God, the two curved fingers - the two natures of Christ, as well as his first coming and his expected second coming. The sign of the cross is drawn from the forehead across the chest to the shoulders.

We cross ourselves in the following way:

We touch them Forehead and say: "Hanuun Hor"; then Breast and say: "yev vortvo"; then we raise our hands to the heart and say: "yev Hogvuyn" and then to the right side and say: "Srbo". Finally we put the Palm centered on chest and say: "Amen".

"Hanun Hor yev Vortvo yev Hokvuyn Srpo. Amen” translated:
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Only-begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, you who by your immeasurable being took on the human body, gave salvation to mankind. To us who are sinners you have given your divine body and blood, turning them into bread and wine, which is beyond our understanding and thought, so that you may always give to those who eat the holy table in faith and holiness forgiveness, acquittal and eternal life. In awe and faith we draw near and kneel before you, gracious God, and beseech you, lift up and blot out our sins. Strengthen us in your love and reverence, give us strength to always do your will and strengthen us to do good deeds that are pleasing to you. Give us a holy heart and a humble spirit to live according to your commandments every day of our lives. Purify our minds and wills so that we may live in holiness and lead our lives in good ways.
